With the new package of military aid, Ukraine will be able to liberate more occupied territories, but it is unlikely that by the end of the year it will be possible to push the Russians out of every centimeter of Ukrainian land. This was stated by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the USA, General Mark Milley, during a press conference following the meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine in Germany on January 20.
"From a military point of view, this is a very difficult struggle," said the general. "There are very difficult battles going on." According to him, to a large extent, the battles are complicated by the fact that the territorial battlefield is very stretched.
From a military point of view, I think it will be very, very difficult to expel Russian troops from every inch of Ukraine occupied by Russia this year," General Milley said. At the same time, he added: "it is very likely" that with new armed capabilities, Ukraine will be able to liberate more territories.
Estimating the losses among the Russian military, Milli said that it was "much more than 100 thousand people."
Mark Milley: "They suffered a lot... it's a very, very bloody war."
"Putin can and should end this war now. It depends on him", Milly believes. The general is convinced that eventually this war should end "somewhere at the negotiating table".
"Ultimately, President Putin, Russia will realize how strategically they miscalculated," Milley said.
US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin called the current period "a crucial moment for Ukraine to defend itself."
"I am sure that Ukraine's international partners from all over the world are ready to take advantage of this moment," the head of the Pentagon said.
According to him, today's meeting in the "Ramstein" format was focused on Ukraine's needs for air defense, armored vehicles, as well as efforts to train the Ukrainian military.
Lloyd Austin said that the provision of various types of weapons to Ukraine includes, in addition to the weapons themselves, training, maintenance and maintenance of these weapons. According to Austin, during military training, Ukrainians are not only taught how to use weapons, but also how to maneuver, avoid obstacles, and similar things.
He emphasized that Ukraine will receive air defense systems from the USA, Germany and the Netherlands. Commenting on the new large-scale package of military aid to Ukraine from various Ramstein countries, Austin noted: "If this weapon is used correctly, it will help to achieve success." International partners will make every effort, he says, to ensure that the use of these weapons is effective.
"At a time when Russian brutality is intensifying, the resolve of this Contact Group is growing," US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized.
General Milley noted that during his entire career, he had never seen NATO as united as it is now: "In all 43 years of my service in the military, this is the most united NATO I have seen," said General Mark Milley.
The US Defense Minister expressed his belief that international partners are ready to support Ukraine in the long term.
"This is not only about Ukrainian security, but also about European and global security. It's about what kind of world we want our children and grandchildren to inherit. About a world where laws matter, rights matter, where people can choose their own path," said the head of the US Department of Defense, Lloyd Austin.
