The Colorado State Rams basketball team apologized after its fans chanted "Russia" at Max Schulza, a Ukrainian player from the rival Utah State Aggies team.
Cheers came from "a small group of people" in the stands and were heard on the CBS telecast of the game as Shulga stepped to the free throw line in the second half. In the end, the team in which the Ukrainian plays won 88 to 79, in particular, thanks to a successful shot by Shulga in the last seconds.
"On behalf of the Colorado State University team, we apologize to the student-athlete and the Utah State University team," said a series of tweets. "This is a violation of our steadfast belief in the Mountain West Sports Integrity Policy and principles university community".
It added: "Every participant, student and fan should feel welcome on our grounds, and what happened is unacceptable at Colorado State University."
Rams coach Niko Medved also apologized on Twitter: "I have a lot of respect for (the UT team) and Max Shulga. We have great fans and students, but this is unacceptable! My sincere apologies."
