European leaders in Davos express optimism about "Leopards 2" for Ukraine

Providing Ukraine with offensive weapons is one of the urgent issues during the discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In particular, the leaders of Poland and Lithuania said that they are optimistic about whether Germany will allow the export of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

According to CNN , answering questions about his expectations from Berlin, the Polish president said: "We hope that the tank manufacturer, Germany, will also participate in this, in my opinion, very good idea. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked me several times about this military support, he told me, Andrzej, we need modern tanks because this is the only way now to stop the Russian invasion."

At the same time, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that "someone should lead this, make a decision to support Ukraine", answering the question about the differences in the Alliance.

"I firmly believe that Chancellor Scholz will solve this issue, and I witnessed a very important turning point in Germany's thinking," the Lithuanian president added.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland said in Davos that he hopes that a decision will be made on the supply of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, and his country is ready to participate in this.

"We are currently in intensive discussions about what else we can do as the European Union, the Nordic countries, to help Ukraine," said Pekka Haavisto. Finland is definitely ready to play its part in this support."

Speaking in Davos, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said that since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine on February 24, more than 9,000 civilians, including 453 children, have been killed.

"We have registered 80,000 crimes by the Russian occupiers, more than 9,000 dead civilians, including 453 children," Yermak said, reiterating that Ukraine seeks to create a special international tribunal to try Russian political leaders and compensate for the destruction caused by Russia's invasion. "We will not condone any (case of) torture or loss of life. Every criminal will be brought to justice."

During her speech in Davos, the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, called on world leaders to do everything possible to achieve peace in Ukraine.

"Now there is a threat of the collapse of the life that people in the world are used to or to which they aspire. What can life be like in the world if it is allowed to hit nuclear power plants with tanks? What will happen to inflation if state borders are allowed to be violated and the integrity of countries will be destroyed? How does the world want to achieve climate neutrality if it has not stopped the burning of entire cities in Ukraine? This is what Russia is doing. And you all know that Russia never had the goal of limiting itself to Ukrainian territory," the speech of the Mirror of the Week quotes .
