During a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday near Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he does not rule out the possibility of sending Leclerc tanks to Ukraine.
Macron said at a press conference that sending tanks should not escalate the situation, should take into account time to teach the Ukrainians to be effective, and should not threaten France's own security.
"Regarding Leclerc, I asked the army minister to work on it, but nothing is ruled out," Macron said, adding that the move would need to be coordinated with allies such as Germany in the coming days and weeks, according to USNews .
Scholz did not comment on whether Germany would agree to provide its Leopard2 tanks.
As the Voice of America previously reported, the new head of the German Defense Ministry, Boris Pistorius, will soon come to Ukraine. He told Bild am Sonntag in an interview published on Sunday.
"It is certain that I will go to Ukraine soon. Probably even during the next four weeks," the minister said.
He also noted that Germany is conducting a very close dialogue regarding the provision of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, primarily with the United States.
As reported by the Voice of America, the eighth meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine was held on Friday under the chairmanship of the United States. About 50 countries took part in the meeting held at the Ramstein base in Germany.
And although announcements about the provision of tanks were not made at the meeting, Ukraine received a "positive breakthrough" on this topic, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said in an exclusive interview with the head of the Ukrainian service of the Voice of America, Ruslan Petrychka.
